Climb through rainforest, open moorland and high mountain desert on this 5-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb, with a summit attempt at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres above sea level. This itinerary follows Kilimanjaro’s established hut route, spending four nights in mountain accommodation before descending to Marangu Gate.
For travellers planning a climb in 2027 or 2028, Marangu offers a straightforward accommodation arrangement: overnight stays at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts rather than sleeping in tents. The ascent and descent follow the same main route, allowing you to see the changing landscape from both directions.
Plan your trek with Eddy Tours & Safaris and discuss your travel dates, previous hiking experience and equipment requirements before choosing your departure.
Before choosing five days: This is a short, demanding high-altitude itinerary with no dedicated acclimatisation day. A six-day Marangu climb adds another night at Horombo and gives more time to adjust. First-time high-altitude trekkers should seriously consider that longer option. Fitness alone does not prevent altitude illness.

What Makes the Marangu Route Different?
Marangu is often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” but the nickname should not suggest an easy summit. The route still reaches the highest point in Africa, and the final ascent involves cold conditions, thin air and a long descent afterwards.
Its main practical distinction is hut accommodation. Climbers stay in designated mountain huts instead of the tented camps used on many other Kilimanjaro routes.
The five-day overnight sequence is:
- Night 1: Mandara Hut.
- Night 2: Horombo Hut.
- Night 3: Kibo Hut.
- Night 4: Horombo Hut after the summit attempt.
Huts provide shelter, but they are basic mountain facilities rather than hotels. Sleeping areas are generally shared, privacy is limited and temperatures can be cold. Bring a suitable sleeping bag even though the itinerary uses huts.
