You’ll enjoy the beautiful scenery, rich biodiversity, and a chance to spot some wildlife. The trail gradually ascends, and after several hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at the Mandara Hut where you will spend the night.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevations: 9,000 ft / 2,700 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m Hiking time: 6-8 hours Hiking distance: 11 km After breakfast, you’ll continue your ascent through the rainforest.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes, and you’ll enter the heather and moorland zone. Along the way, you’ll pass by Maundi Crater, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After a full day of hiking, you’ll reach the Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevations: 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 15,400 ft / 4,700 m Hiking time: 6-8 hours Hiking distance: 10 km Today’s trek takes you further up the mountain, traversing through the alpine desert zone.

The trail gradually ascends, and you’ll have a chance to admire the unique plant life adapted to the harsh mountain environment. As you approach Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt, the landscape becomes more rugged and barren.

The hike is challenging, and you’ll need to pace yourself. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you’ll have an early dinner and rest as much as possible to prepare for the summit push that begins later in the evening.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Summit then Horombo Hut

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. You’ll start the summit attempt in the middle of the night, usually around midnight.

The trail to the summit, called Uhuru Peak, is steep and requires a slow and steady pace. You’ll hike through rocky terrain and scree slopes as you ascend higher. From Gilman’s Point, it takes about an hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to the Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 5: Horombo hut to Marangu gate to Moshi

From there, you’ll transfer to Moshi, where you can rest, celebrate, and reflect on your incredible journey up Mount Kilimanjaro.
