Overview
The Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro.
It offers magnificent views, diverse vegetation zones, and a rewarding acclimatization profile.
Starting from the south, the route ascends through tropical rainforest, heather and moorland zones, alpine desert, and finally to the glaciated summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.

Day 01: Machame Gate (1,800m) Machame Camp (2,835m)
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Distance: 11 km
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast and a short briefing, drive from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate (1,800m). Complete park registration formalities, meet your mountain crew, and begin the climb through lush rainforest.
The trail is steep but beautiful, with a variety of flora and occasional wildlife sightings.

Day 02: Machame Camp Shira Cave Camp (3,750m), 6 days Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame route
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Distance: 5 km
Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, ascend through moorland to the open highlands. The vegetation changes to heather and volcanic rock formations.
Arrive at Shira Cave Camp, located on the western plateau of Kilimanjaro, offering panoramic views of Mount Meru in the distance.

Day 03: Shira Cave Camp Lava Tower (4,630m) Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 10 km
Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine
This is an important acclimatization day.
You’ll hike up to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). The “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Enjoy a hot dinner and a beautiful sunset view with the towering Barranco Wall ahead.

Day 04: Barranco Camp Karanga Camp (3,995m), 6 days Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame route
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, tackle the iconic Barranco Wall a fun, non-technical climb with rewarding views.
Continue through ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp, set on a scenic ridge with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Day 05: Karanga Camp Barafu Camp (4,673m) Summit Attempt (5,895m) Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Total hiking time: 11–14 hours
Distance: 17 km
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
Early morning start! Hike to Barafu Camp for a short rest and early dinner.
At around midnight, begin the summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point (5,739m).
Reach the summit by sunrise and celebrate your achievement the Roof of Africa!
Descend carefully to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.

Day 06: Mweka Camp Mweka Gate (1,640m) Return to Arusha
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Distance: 10 km
Habitat: Rainforest
Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain before descending through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Receive your summit certificates and say farewell to your mountain crew.
Transfer back to Arusha for relaxation or onward travel.
