Detailed 8 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

You should arrive in Tanzania at least one day before the climb begins. Our team will arrange your airport transfer if included in your booking, and you will travel to your hotel in Moshi. Before departure, you will meet your mountain guide for a briefing about the route, expected weather, altitude, equipment, and daily walking schedule. The guide will also check your clothing, sleeping bag, hiking boots, and other important items. Any missing equipment can be arranged for rental in Moshi, subject to availability. This arrival day is separate from the eight days spent on the mountain.

Day 1: Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: approximately 2,650 m at camp | Hiking distance: 6 km | Walking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you will meet the rest of your climbing group and travel by vehicle towards Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your guide will complete the necessary park registration while the mountain crew prepares the equipment and supplies. Depending on road conditions, you will continue by vehicle towards the Lemosho trailhead before beginning your walk through the rainforest. This section of the route is usually shaded by tall trees and thick vegetation, and the forest supports several bird species and other wildlife. The walking pace will be comfortable, allowing everyone to settle into the climb. You will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp in the afternoon, where your tents and evening meal will be prepared.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,650 m to 3,500 m | Distance: 8 km | Walking time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, the group will leave Mti Mkubwa Camp and continue uphill through the remaining forest before entering the moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter as the trail climbs towards Shira Ridge, and the views begin to open across the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. Some sections are steep, so your guide will maintain a slow pace and allow regular stops for water and rest. After crossing the ridge, you will continue towards Shira 1 Camp, situated on the Shira Plateau. By this stage, the altitude becomes more noticeable, making it important to walk slowly, drink regularly, and report any symptoms of altitude sickness to your guide.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,500 m to 3,850 m | Distance: 8 km | Walking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland

The third day involves a more gradual walk across the Shira Plateau, one of the most interesting sections of the Lemosho Route. The landscape is open, with low vegetation, volcanic rock formations, and views towards Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. Compared with the previous day, the elevation gain is smaller, giving the group additional time to adjust to the thinner air. You will continue towards Shira 2 Camp, where the afternoon can be spent resting, checking equipment, and preparing for the next day’s hike to Lava Tower. Your guide will continue monitoring how everyone is responding to the altitude.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Starting elevation: 3,850 m | Lava Tower: approximately 4,600 m | Barranco Camp: 3,900 m | Distance: 10 km | Walking time: 6–8 hours

This is an important acclimatization day because the trail climbs to a higher elevation before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp. After breakfast, the group will leave Shira 2 Camp and walk towards Lava Tower, passing through increasingly rocky and dry terrain. The ascent may feel more demanding because of the altitude, and some climbers may experience headaches, reduced appetite, or tiredness. Your guide will assess these symptoms and decide whether it is safe to continue. After reaching the Lava Tower area, the group will descend towards Barranco Valley, where the vegetation gradually changes and giant groundsels can be seen. The day finishes at Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,900 m to approximately 4,000 m | Distance: 5 km | Walking time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, you will begin the ascent of Barranco Wall, one of the best-known sections of the Lemosho Route. Although the wall looks steep from the campsite, it is normally climbed by scrambling along a recognised route rather than technical rock climbing. Some sections require the use of your hands for balance, and your guide will help the group move safely through the more exposed areas. After reaching the top, you will continue across a series of ridges and valleys towards Karanga Camp. The afternoon is generally reserved for resting and preparing for the higher elevations ahead. This shorter day also helps provide additional acclimatization time before the final summit approach.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: approximately 4,000 m to 4,673 m | Distance: 4 km | Walking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Alpine desert

The group will leave Karanga Camp after breakfast and continue uphill towards Barafu Camp, the main base for the final summit attempt on this route. The trail becomes increasingly rocky, with little vegetation and wide views of the surrounding mountain slopes. Because Barafu Camp is situated at a high elevation, even a relatively short walk may feel tiring. After arriving, your guide will explain the summit-night schedule, review clothing and equipment, and advise everyone to rest. Dinner is normally served early because the summit attempt begins late at night or shortly after midnight. You should prepare your headlamp, gloves, warm clothing, water, and snacks before going to sleep.

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Barafu Camp: 4,673 m | Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m | Mweka Camp: approximately 3,100 m | Total distance: 16–17 km | Walking time: 12–16 hours

Summit day is the longest and most physically demanding part of the climb. The group will normally begin walking around midnight, following a steep trail towards Stella Point on the crater rim. Temperatures can be extremely cold, and the combination of darkness, wind, fatigue, and high altitude makes the ascent challenging. Your guide will maintain a slow pace, organise regular stops, and monitor each climber’s condition. From Stella Point, those who are fit to continue will follow the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. After reaching the summit, weather and safety conditions permitting, you will have time for photographs before beginning the long descent to Barafu Camp and then Mweka Camp. Reaching Uhuru Peak is never guaranteed, and your guide may require a climber to descend earlier for safety reasons.

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Elevation: approximately 3,100 m to 1,640 m | Distance: 10 km | Walking time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, you will begin the final descent through the rainforest towards Mweka Gate. The trail can be wet and slippery, particularly after rainfall, so suitable footwear and trekking poles are useful. At the gate, the group will complete the park exit procedures, and eligible climbers will receive their summit certificates. You will then meet your transfer vehicle and return to Moshi, where you can rest after eight days on the mountain. Travellers planning an international flight should allow enough time for the return transfer and any additional overnight accommodation required.

Why Choose the 8 Days Lemosho Route for Group Joining?

The Lemosho Route is a good option for travellers who want to climb Kilimanjaro without following a very short mountain schedule. Starting from the western side of the mountain, the route passes through rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone. The eight-day itinerary includes shorter walking days and a climb to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, giving the body more time to adjust to changes in elevation. Nevertheless, altitude sickness can affect anyone, including experienced hikers, and a longer itinerary does not eliminate the risks of climbing at high altitude.

Joining a group also helps travellers share the cost of mountain transport, guides, porters, and camping equipment. Solo travellers and couples can join other climbers on the same departure rather than arranging a private expedition. Everyone follows the planned route, but the guides will monitor individual fitness and altitude symptoms throughout the trek. Climbers should be prepared for early starts, shared camping arrangements, changing mountain weather, and several hours of walking each day.

You can read more about the available routes in our Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes Guide or explore our Kilimanjaro Group Joining Departures.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro via Lemosho in 2027 and 2028

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but weather conditions differ between seasons. January to early March and June to October are generally popular climbing periods because they often provide relatively drier conditions. However, rainfall, cloud cover, strong winds, and freezing temperatures can occur at any time, especially at higher elevations. The long-rain season generally falls around March to May, while shorter rains are often experienced around November, although these patterns can vary.

Travel periodGeneral climbing conditions
January–FebruaryOften relatively dry, with cold summit conditions
March–MayGreater likelihood of rain and muddy lower trails
June–AugustGenerally drier, but often cold at higher elevations
September–OctoberPopular climbing months with often favourable conditions
November–DecemberVariable weather, including periods of rain

For travellers looking to join a group, it is advisable to confirm the departure date before purchasing international flights. You can review our published Kilimanjaro group climbing schedule, but individual departures, group sizes, and 2028 arrangements must be confirmed directly with Eddy Tours & Safaris.

How Difficult Is the 8 Days Lemosho Route?

The eight-day Lemosho Route is a challenging high-altitude trek. It does not normally require technical mountaineering skills, but climbers need reasonable physical fitness, suitable equipment, and the ability to walk for several hours on consecutive days. The route includes steep sections, uneven ground, the Barranco Wall scramble, and a demanding summit ascent that begins during the night. The greatest difficulty is often the altitude rather than the walking distance alone, because the amount of oxygen available decreases as you climb higher.

Preparing before your trip can make the physical demands more manageable. Regular hiking, hill walking, stair climbing, and other endurance exercises can help strengthen your legs and improve stamina. If possible, practise walking with a small daypack and the boots you intend to wear on Kilimanjaro. Anyone with medical concerns should seek appropriate advice before attempting a high-altitude climb. On the mountain, report headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness, or changes in coordination to your guide promptly rather than trying to push through worsening symptoms.

Accommodation and Meals During the Lemosho Climb

The Lemosho Route uses mountain camps rather than permanent sleeping huts. Climbers stay in tents at designated campsites, normally sharing with another group member unless a single tent has been arranged. The mountain crew carries and prepares the camping equipment, while climbers carry a daypack containing water, snacks, rain protection, and other items needed during the walk. Sleeping mattresses are included, but a suitable cold-weather sleeping bag is required because nighttime temperatures can fall considerably at higher camps.

Meals are prepared by the mountain cook and generally include breakfast, packed or prepared lunches, and hot evening meals. The exact menu may change according to available supplies and the daily walking schedule. Travellers with dietary requirements should inform the company before booking so that suitable arrangements can be discussed. Drinking water is treated for use on the mountain, and climbers should carry enough water for each day’s walk according to their guide’s instructions.

Kilimanjaro Group Joining Price for 2027/2028

The price of an eight-day Lemosho group-joining climb depends on the departure date, group arrangements, park fees, and services included. Eddy Tours & Safaris has previously published an indicative price of USD 1,800 per person for an eight-day Lemosho group climb, but this should not be treated as a confirmed price for 2027 or 2028. Eddy Tours and Safaris

Before booking, request a current quotation showing the total price per person, confirmed inclusions, accommodation arrangements, deposit requirements, payment charges, and cancellation conditions. You should also confirm whether airport transfers and hotel nights are included, because these services may be quoted separately.

Can You Combine the Lemosho Route with a Tanzania Safari?

Yes. After completing your Kilimanjaro climb, you can extend your holiday with a wildlife safari to some of Tanzania’s best-known national parks. Popular destinations include Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and Lake Manyara. A short safari may include Tarangire and Ngorongoro, while travellers with additional time can continue towards the Serengeti for several days of wildlife viewing.

It is advisable to allow time to rest after the mountain trek before beginning another demanding travel schedule. Our team can help arrange a suitable extension based on your available days, preferred accommodation, and budget.
