6-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb 2027: Full Itinerary & Booking

7-Days Lemosho Kilimanjaro Climb 2025

Climb through rainforest, cross the Shira Plateau and walk beneath Kilimanjaro’s summit slopes on this 6-day Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb in 2027. The journey follows a camping itinerary from Machame Gate, with a summit attempt at Uhuru Peak before descending through Mweka.

Machame offers changing landscapes throughout the trek. Each day brings different terrain, from forest trails and open moorland to rocky valleys and the high alpine environment. With a guide team, mountain meals and organised camping arrangements, the package brings the main climbing services together into one itinerary.

The six-day schedule is demanding. It combines the trek from Barranco to Barafu into one day, passing through Karanga without an overnight stop there. This leaves less acclimatization time than the seven-day Machame itinerary, so discuss both options before choosing your climb.

Why Choose the Machame Route?

Experience several mountain landscapes

Machame takes you through contrasting environments. You begin beneath the forest canopy, continue into more open country and eventually reach the sparse, rocky terrain above the vegetation zones.

This variety makes the journey rewarding beyond the summit attempt. Allow yourself time to appreciate the mountain while maintaining the pace set by your guide.

Ascend and descend on different trails

The climb starts at Machame Gate and finishes at Mweka Gate. Your descent therefore follows a different side of the mountain, adding another perspective to the trek.

Enjoy a supported camping experience

Machame uses mountain campsites rather than Marangu’s huts. Your quotation should identify the sleeping tents, mattresses, dining arrangements and other equipment provided.

TANAPA requires climbs to be guided through a licensed operator and identifies camping as the accommodation arrangement on routes other than Marangu.

Fit the trek into a shorter holiday

Six mountain days may suit travellers with limited time. However, you still need additional days for arrival, preparation and departure.

Choose this schedule after reviewing its demands. Saving one day should not be the only reason for selecting it.

Detailed 6-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Before the Climb: Arrival and Preparation

Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to your booked accommodation in Moshi or Arusha. Airport transfers and hotel nights should be confirmed in your quotation.

Before entering the park, attend a briefing and equipment check. This is the time to review the daily schedule, ask questions and arrange any required rentals.

Keep your trekking boots, essential medication and some important clothing in your hand luggage where airline rules allow. Delayed checked baggage can otherwise complicate your preparation.

A separate preparation day is useful if your travel schedule permits.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Approximate walking time: 5–7 hours
Landscape: Rainforest
Overnight: Machame Camp

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations. Your trek begins along forest trails, with a steady ascent towards the first campsite.

Walk at a comfortable pace from the beginning. The opening day is an opportunity to settle into the routine of trekking, carrying your daypack and following your guide’s instructions.

Forest conditions can be damp, so keep waterproof clothing accessible. At camp, organise your sleeping equipment, have dinner and prepare for the next morning.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Approximate walking time: 4–6 hours
Landscape: Heath and moorland
Overnight: Shira Camp

Continue uphill as the forest gives way to more open terrain. The trail includes rocky sections, and your pace should remain steady.

The day ends on the Shira Plateau, where the surroundings feel noticeably different from the forest below. If conditions are clear, take time to enjoy the mountain views before settling into camp.

Use the afternoon to rest and prepare your layers for cooler conditions. Tell your guide how you are feeling, including any headache, nausea or unusual fatigue.

Day 3: Shira Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Approximate walking time: 6–8 hours
Landscape: Open moorland and alpine terrain
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Today’s route heads towards Lava Tower before descending to Barranco. The walk introduces higher terrain while ending at a lower sleeping elevation than the day’s highest point.

The surroundings become increasingly rocky and exposed. Keep warm clothing, rain protection and snacks within reach.

After the descent, arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the mountain’s southern slopes. Rest, eat and prepare for the following day’s longer trek.

The Shira–Lava Tower–Barranco stage is part of the established Machame itinerary, followed by the ascent towards Barafu.

Day 4: Barranco Camp via Karanga to Barafu Camp

Approximate walking time: 8–10 hours
Landscape: Rocky slopes and alpine desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Begin with the Barranco Wall. Some sections require using your hands for balance, and your guide will explain how to move through them.

After crossing the wall, continue through hills and valleys towards Karanga. On this six-day itinerary, you carry on to Barafu rather than staying overnight at Karanga.

This is a substantial walking day before the summit attempt. On arrival, organise your summit clothing, headlamp, gloves and water-carrying system. Have your meal and rest as much as possible.

Your guide will review the departure time and assess whether continuing towards the summit is appropriate for you.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

Approximate walking time: 6–8 hours ascending, followed by 4–6 hours descending
Landscape: High summit terrain, then lower mountain slopes
Overnight: Mweka Camp

The summit attempt normally begins during the night. Walking slowly in the darkness, you climb towards Stella Point on the crater rim.

If your condition and the circumstances allow, continue to Uhuru Peak. The objective is the summit, but reaching it is never guaranteed.

After the summit attempt, descend towards Barafu for a break before continuing to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most physically demanding stage of the journey. The descent requires concentration, particularly when you are tired.

At Mweka, have dinner and spend your final night on the mountain.

The standard six-day schedule places the summit attempt and descent to Mweka on Day 5, followed by the final descent on Day 6.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Approximate walking time: 3–4 hours
Landscape: Forest
Finish: Mweka Gate

After breakfast, continue downhill through the forest to Mweka Gate. Lower sections may be wet or muddy, so keep suitable footwear and rain protection ready.

Complete the park exit formalities and meet your transfer vehicle. Return to your booked accommodation for a shower, rest and a meal.

Plan your onward travel around the expected return time. A hotel night after the climb provides a more comfortable finish than a tightly timed airport connection.

Six-Day or Seven-Day Machame: Which Should You Book?

ConsiderationSix-day MachameSeven-day Machame
Mountain duration6 days7 days
Karanga overnightUsually omittedUsually included
Barranco to BarafuCombined into one daySplit across two days
Time available for acclimatizationShorterLonger
Overall commitmentFewer mountain daysOne additional mountain day

For a first high-altitude trek, compare the seven-day itinerary before committing to six days. A longer schedule can provide more time for adjustment, although it does not remove altitude illness risk.

Physical fitness does not protect you from altitude illness. The CDC identifies ascent rate and altitude exposure as important factors and recommends gradual acclimatization.

Who Is This Package Suitable For?

The six-day Machame climb may suit travellers who:

  • Have experience with consecutive hiking days.
  • Are comfortable sleeping in tents.
  • Can manage long walking stages and a demanding descent.
  • Understand the limitations of a shorter altitude itinerary.
  • Have discussed their health and route suitability before booking.

If you are unsure, share your trekking history with the team. Include previous altitude experience, typical walking distances and any concerns about camping or the Barranco Wall.

What Does the 2027 Package Cost?

Request a quotation based on your travel dates and group size. The cost depends on the services included, accommodation arrangements and whether you book privately or join a confirmed group.

To compare offers fairly, check that each quotation covers the same number of mountain days and similar services. Review equipment, transfers, hotel nights and fees alongside the headline price.

Any 2027 discount or group departure should be confirmed in writing, including eligibility and cancellation conditions.

Equipment and Training

Bring well-fitting trekking boots, waterproof outerwear, insulating layers, warm gloves, a hat, sunglasses and a headlamp with spare batteries.

You will also need a suitable sleeping bag, daypack and water-carrying system. Request the full packing list and rental options before travelling.

Prepare with regular walks and longer hikes on consecutive days. Practise uphill walking and descents while carrying your daypack. Test your footwear early enough to resolve discomfort before the trip.

Speak with a qualified healthcare professional about high-altitude travel and any existing medical conditions. During the climb, report symptoms promptly. Do not continue ascending with altitude illness symptoms; worsening symptoms require descent and appropriate care.

Add a Safari After Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Allow some recovery time, then continue with a Tanzania safari. Your extension can be planned around the days available, accommodation preference and wildlife interests.

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti offer different itinerary possibilities. Keep the route manageable so you have time to explore rather than spend most of the extension travelling.
