This 6-day Tanzania joining group safari is built for travellers who want to experience the Northern Safari Circuit with a small shared group and a clear, realistic itinerary. The route covers Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. It gives you enough time in the Serengeti to enjoy two full days of game viewing, rather than only passing through on a long transfer.
A joining group safari means you share the vehicle and guide with other travellers on the same confirmed departure. It is a sociable and cost-conscious way to travel, while still including a proper 4×4 safari vehicle, park fees, accommodation and guided game drives. If you prefer your own vehicle and your own pace, this same itinerary can also be arranged as a private safari for a couple, family or group of friends.

Joining group safari or private safari: the difference
These two travel styles should be kept clear. On a joining group safari, you share the vehicle, guide and daily schedule with other guests. This keeps the per-person cost lower and can be enjoyable for solo travellers and couples who like meeting people. The group follows a sensible common timetable, with meal stops and game drives agreed by the guide.
On a private safari, the vehicle is reserved only for your booking. You can stay longer at a sighting, change the start time within reason, select a specific accommodation level and adapt the route around children, photography interests or a special occasion. The parks and wildlife experience are the same; the main difference is flexibility and price.
Joining group departures are confirmed according to current availability. Do not book flights around an assumed date. Ask Eddy Tours & Safaris for the current 2027, 2028 or 2029 departure list, group size, accommodation category and exact total before making travel arrangements.

Detailed 6-day Tanzania safari itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. The city sits beneath Mount Meru and is the usual starting point for northern Tanzania safaris. Use the afternoon to rest after your flight, organise your day bag and meet the safari representative for a short briefing.
The briefing covers your route, vehicle seating, luggage, meal arrangements and early morning departure. Tell us about dietary needs, medical considerations or any important flight details at this stage. An overnight before the safari is a sensible buffer after international travel.
Meals: Dinner if included in your confirmed arrangement
Overnight: Arusha hotel
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive toward Tarangire National Park. The road journey normally takes two to three hours, depending on traffic and your hotel location. Tarangire is known for its enormous baobab trees, broad woodland and elephant herds. In the dry season, the Tarangire River is an important water source and draws many animals.
Enter the park for a full game drive with a packed lunch. Look for elephants, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, warthog and birdlife. Predators are present, but no sighting can be guaranteed. The park’s real charm is the landscape and the chance to watch elephant families move slowly between the trees.
In the late afternoon, leave the park and drive to the Mto wa Mbu or Karatu area for dinner and overnight.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Budget lodge or tented camp near Mto wa Mbu / Karatu
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park – transfer toward Serengeti
After breakfast, visit Lake Manyara National Park. The forest near the gate is a complete contrast to Tarangire’s dry baobab landscape. Troops of baboons are frequently seen, blue monkeys may be in the trees, and elephants sometimes move quietly through the forest. As the road opens, look for giraffe, buffalo, zebra, hippo and birds around the lake.
Lake Manyara is well known for tree-climbing lions, but the lions are wild and may be resting anywhere in the park. Your guide will search appropriate areas without promising an artificial result. Enjoy your picnic lunch, then continue through the Ngorongoro highlands toward the Serengeti. The drive is part of the experience; keep a camera ready for changing scenery and possible wildlife along the way.
Arrive at your Central Serengeti camp or lodge in time for dinner. Follow camp staff guidance after dark, as wildlife may move through unfenced safari areas.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp or lodge
Day 4: Full-day game drive in Central Serengeti
Spend a full day in Central Serengeti, often the strongest all-year area for resident wildlife. The Seronera Valley, kopjes, river lines and open plains support lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, buffalo, zebra and many antelope species. Start early and let your guide plan the day around the animals rather than a fixed tourist circuit.
A leopard may be resting in a tree near a river, while cheetahs often use open country and termite mounds as viewing points. Lions may be asleep for much of the heat of the day, then become active as temperatures drop. The guide reads tracks, vultures, alarm calls and radio updates, but the best sightings often come from patience rather than rushing.
Have a picnic lunch in the bush or return to camp depending on the chosen accommodation and group schedule. Continue with an afternoon game drive before returning for dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Central Serengeti camp or lodge
Day 5: Serengeti game drive – Ngorongoro Highlands
Enjoy a final morning game drive in Central Serengeti, then begin travelling east through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route allows for wildlife viewing as you go, so it is not simply a transfer. Depending on the season, you may see migration herds, but their location changes with rainfall and grazing. No responsible operator will guarantee a particular crossing or herd position.
After a packed lunch, continue toward Karatu or the Ngorongoro Highlands. Check into your lodge or camp, have dinner and rest early. The next day begins before sunrise for the Ngorongoro Crater descent.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Overnight: Karatu or Ngorongoro Highlands lodge/camp
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater game drive – return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend approximately 600 metres into the crater. The floor contains grassland, woodland, swamps and Lake Magadi. It supports a high concentration of animals, including buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, lion, hyena and many birds. Elephants may be found close to Lerai Forest. Black rhino is possible but remains one of the harder animals to see.
Enjoy a packed lunch at the designated picnic site, then continue the game drive before leaving the crater in the afternoon. Return to Arusha for hotel drop-off or an airport transfer if your flight time is appropriate. A later flight or extra Arusha night is recommended because road conditions and wildlife sightings affect arrival time.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
End of safari: Arusha hotel or agreed airport transfer

Best travel time for this Tanzania group safari
This route works through the year. June to October is generally dry and popular, with thinner vegetation and good all-round wildlife viewing. It is also a busy time, so joining-group dates and camps should be confirmed early. January and February can be excellent, and may be combined with the migration calving season in the southern Serengeti/ Ndutu region through a route adjustment.
March to May is greener and can be quieter, but rain may affect road conditions. November and December often bring shorter rains, with fresh landscapes and variable weather. The best safari date is the one that matches your available leave, budget and wildlife interests; your itinerary can then be positioned for the expected seasonal conditions.
Group safari etiquette and practical advice
A joining group safari works best when everyone respects the shared timetable. Be ready on time for morning departures, keep luggage within the stated limit and tell the guide if you are feeling unwell. During wildlife sightings, keep your voice low, remain inside the vehicle unless instructed otherwise and avoid pressuring the guide to drive too close to an animal.
Bring light neutral-coloured layers, a warm fleece for early mornings and Ngorongoro evenings, sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses, closed shoes and a light rain jacket in wetter months. A small day bag should hold camera, power bank, water and medication. Binoculars are useful, especially for birds and animals in the distance.
Why this route is a good first Tanzania safari
Six days gives you the variety that makes northern Tanzania special. Tarangire’s baobabs and elephants feel very different from Lake Manyara’s groundwater forest. The Serengeti offers the biggest horizons and the best time with predators, while the Ngorongoro Crater adds a concentrated final wildlife day in a volcanic landscape. Instead of spending the whole trip in one habitat, you see how the ecosystems connect across the region.
It also gives the Serengeti the time it deserves. Many short itineraries arrive late, sleep once and leave the next morning. This route includes two nights in Central Serengeti, allowing both early and late game drives. That improves your chance of seeing wildlife when it is active and makes the long road journey from Arusha worthwhile.
Accommodation levels and what to expect
Joining group safaris can be offered in different styles, depending on the confirmed departure. A budget camping option normally uses public or special campsites and has a cook and support arrangement. It is the most affordable option but requires comfort with tents and shared facilities. A budget tented camp offers more comfort, usually with beds and a basic en-suite or nearby bathroom.
Mid-range lodges and tented camps provide private en-suite rooms, more reliable hot water, larger dining areas and a calmer place to rest. Luxury options may include a pool, spacious suites, premium locations and more personal service. The wildlife is outside the camp; what changes is your comfort level after the game drive. Always check the accommodation names or exact category on the quotation, especially for a joining group.
Wildlife and migration expectations
It is realistic to expect a wide range of wildlife on this route: elephant, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, hippo, baboon, warthog, lion, hyena and many birds are all possible. Leopard and cheetah are present in the Serengeti but need patience and luck. Black rhino is possible in Ngorongoro but is never a guarantee. A meaningful safari is not judged only by a Big Five list; an experienced guide explains animal behaviour and the landscape as a whole.
The Great Migration moves with rain and grass, so it is not always in Central Serengeti. When the herds are elsewhere, resident wildlife remains excellent. If the migration is your main priority, tell us the month you are travelling before booking. We may recommend changing camp locations or using a different route to place you closer to the likely herd movement. We will never promise a river crossing or a particular animal sighting on a fixed day.
Responsible travel matters
National parks protect wildlife for future visitors as well as for the present safari. Your guide follows authorised tracks, park speed limits and viewing distances. Please do not feed animals, litter, play loud music or ask for off-road driving where it is prohibited. A calm, respectful sighting is more rewarding than a crowded one where an animal is pressured.
Use reusable water bottles where possible, listen to camp staff about water and power use, and ask before photographing people outside the park. In the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maasai communities live in the wider landscape; a cultural visit should be approached with respect and genuine interest.
Before you book
Ask for the departure date, group size, vehicle seating, accommodation level and full inclusions in writing. Confirm whether the group is already operating or requires additional guests. Check the cancellation terms before buying flights. It is sensible to arrive in Arusha the day before the safari and, if you have an international flight after Day 6, keep an extra night in town or choose a late departure.
Travel insurance is recommended. Check passport validity, Tanzanian visa requirements and travel-health guidance before leaving home, as rules and medical recommendations can change. If you have dietary requirements, mobility needs, celebrations or children travelling, tell us at enquiry stage so the group arrangement is suitable.

Frequently asked questions
Can I join alone?
Yes. Solo travellers are welcome on confirmed joining group departures. You share the safari vehicle and guide, while accommodation can be arranged in a single room or shared room where that option is available.
Is a joining safari cheaper than private?
Usually, because the vehicle and guide costs are shared. The exact difference depends on group size, season and accommodation category. Ask for both options if you are travelling with friends or family.
Will there be a window seat for every guest?
Vehicles are planned for comfortable wildlife viewing, but seating arrangement and group size should be confirmed before booking. We aim to avoid overcrowding because space affects the quality of the game drive.
Can the itinerary change because of weather?
Minor adjustments can be necessary for rain, road conditions, park rules or wildlife movement. The guide will always protect the core route while choosing the safest and most worthwhile way to use each day.
That flexibility is a normal part of responsible safari travel and helps every guest get the most from the parks.
